Dender Ferry

The Dender ferry connects the banks of the river Dender between Schendelbeke and Idegem at De Gavers. On summer Sundays, it is a fun attraction for hikers and cyclists alike.

The Dender ferry is quite unique in its kind. In Belgium, only a handful of them are still in existence. The spring is a manually operated cable ferry: two steel cables tensioned between the banks ensure that the ferryman can use his full weight to pull the ferry to the other side by means of a kind of wooden bat. After crossing, the ferryman lowers the steel cables to the bottom of the Dender to allow boats to pass without being obstructed.

Anyone who wants to get acquainted with this unique piece of sailing heritage for free is welcome between 1.00 p.m. and 7.00 p.m. every Sunday and public holiday between May and September.
